Miami Rara

Charo Oquet’ s “Miami Rara” is a unique work that integrates installation with music, dance and costuming. It presents performance art as situated within, and in dialog with, the neighborhood it is located within. Taking its form from the Dominican/Haitian Gaga/Rara carnival tradition, which has common heritage with Afro-Cuban and African American carnival traditions, “Miami Rara”particularly serves as a meeting place for audience to interact with Miami’s pan-Caribbean heritage and communities.

Performed live for the first time in its full production at the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami on December 3, 2017 for their inauguration.

With 30 participants including a Rara band with 5 members and dancers and performers as well as members of the community.
